Factors Affecting The Quality of Raw Hides and Skins

Leather is a material which is loved by humankind since ages. It is flexible and durable enough. It is made from the tanning process of different types of animal hides and skins. Handmade leather products are generally loved by all be, its leather bags, leather shoes, wallet, cases or leather jackets. Leather quality is a very important thing because it ensures the durability of leather goods.  People always prefer long durable leather goods.

There are a few factors that affect leather quality. Let's have a look!         

The type of skin – Raw leather usually comes from animals like buffalo, cow or goat and buffalo hide is thicker and more durable than cowhide because of its relative size and strength of fibers. Goat hide is very much used to make leather articles such as handmade leather bags. So what type of skin we are using for leather is always a mentionable factor for leather quality and leather goods.

Originate – Leather affecting quality also depends on the health of the animal. The health of the animal is always influenced by the environment in which he was raised. If the climate is good for the animal and he was raised naturally not with artificial hormones then he will produce tighter and stronger hides. The good environment will show in their skins and also on the leather. It is easy to identify the differences in skin qualities that are available in all the species.  Below are some factors that can affect leather hides quality.

  • Age – The older animal’s hide is not so good in comparison to a young animal.
  • Gender – Female hides generally have a nice fiber structure.
  • Climate – The climate also affects the leather skin of the animal.

Quality of Rawhide -  In the process of making leather from the hide. Hides are inspected and separated into grades based on their number of imperfections
Then the various types of leather are produced to make leather products from them.

Process of Tannery – Tanning is the process that is done to produce leather. In this process, the hides of animals are treated to produce leather. There are two methods of tanning.

  • Chemical process – In this process some chemical is used to tan the leather. Many people do not prefer the chemical process of tanning and we also do not use any kind of chemicals.
  • Natural tanning – In this process, the leather is tan naturally. The Sun-Tan process is used to tan the leather.

No matter what type of leather product you are using. If you use a genuine leather goods, it will give you a nice feel. It will be durable and also leather product gets deepens with the age. So you will love your leather goods more with time.
